Commencement Cords and Stoles
Graduates may be able to add cords and stoles to their regalia. The Stole of Gratitude is available from the Associated Students Bookstore, whereas many of the others are distributed by the associated program or department. Students eligible for honor cords will be contacted with instructions on how to pick these up.

| Alpha Kappa Delta | Cord | AKD is an honor society for Sociology students. | Alumni Association | Stole | A stole of gratitude is worn by a graduate and then presented to someone who provided extraordinary help or support during the student’s college career. Immediately after graduation, the graduate may take a stole from around his/her neck and place it around the neck of the recipient. More than one stole may be worn during commencement, symbolizing that there are multiple people destined to receive this gift. | Behavioral Neuroscience | Cord | The behavioral neuroscience major emphasizes an understanding of nervous system structure and function from the molecular/cellular level to the whole organism systems level. These “myelinated neuron” cords symbolize the transmission of knowledge, fundamental principles, and abilities our graduates possess to recognize the applicability of an education in neuroscience to real world settings and their lives post-graduation. | Compass 2 Campus | Cord | Compass 2 Campus's (C2C) mission is to increase access to higher education for students in Whatcom and Skagit counties who have been historically excluded from higher education by providing low-income and Black, Indigenous, and students of color with trained college student mentors. Each year, C2C places between 600 and 800 college student mentors and employs 40 Western students. Support for student leaders to develop peer mentoring and leadership skills is part of the program’s commitment to college success as well as college access. | Competitive Programming Club (CPC) | Cord | The Competitive Programming Club (CPC) and the Computer Science Department proudly celebrate the hard work of our members, competitors, and club leaders. Graduates who have earned a blue and black cord have dedicated countless hours to improving their problem-solving skills and growing our tech community. Together, they have represented Western Washington University at the highest levels, including the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), consistently bringing home medals. | Financial Aid Department | Cord | The Financial Aid Department congratulates and celebrates our graduating student employees who have worked in the Financial Aid main office, Scholarship Center, or the Work Study Center. Our student employees have worked incredibly hard to learn ever changing Federal, State, and institutional regulations regarding financial aid and are often our first point of contact when fielding student and parent questions. | Financial Management Association | Cord | The Financial Management Association (FMA) is a student-led academic organization dedicated to helping peers explore and prepare for careers in finance. Our mission is to provide meaningful connections, educational resources, and valuable insights into the financial industry. We host bi-weekly meetings featuring guest speakers from diverse sectors such as Real Estate, Investment Management, and Banking. In addition, we offer professional development workshops designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their careers in finance. | Honor Cords | Cord | Gold honor cords designate students graduating with magna cum laude or cum laude. Magna shall be awarded to students whose honor gpa places them at the 97th percentile or higher among graduating seniors. Cum laude shall be awarded to students whose honor gpa places them at the 92nd-96th percentile among graduating seniors. White cords are dedicated to students completing all of the requirements of the University Honors Program. | Learning Environment Action Discovery (LEAD) | Cord | Learning Environment Action Discovery (LEAD) is a student-run restoration program in the College of the Environment. | Marine Mammal Ecology Lab | Cord | As one of the largest research labs on campus, we work hard to maintain a close-knit community. Our observational studies require researchers to work together and navigate the often-unforgiving elements. These light grey/silver ("seal colored") cords are a well-deserved representation of the hard work and dedication demonstrated by our graduates and go out to those who have shown consistent contribution to furthering the scientific knowledge of marine mammal ecology. | Merriman Financial Literacy Program | Cord | The Merriman Financial Literacy Program directs its efforts towards furthering financial literacy for all. The program is run by a team of peer mentors, with whom students can meet one-on-one to discuss any of their financial literacy needs. The mentors also organize and put on workshops in a variety of settings on topics ranging from the emotions of personal finance to intermediate portfolio management. The MFLP also offers an online site called iGrad, at which students can learn more from a variety of tools, resources, and courses at their own pace. | Salish Sea Minor | Cord | The students that have earned the red, blue, and silver cords of the Salish Sea Institute have been introduced to the complex human-environment systems and history of the multi-national Salish Sea region. They learned different ways of knowing, traditional knowledge, and the value of building meaningful connections across borders, disciplines, cultures and systems. They understand the transboundary nature of the environmental challenges and solutions in the region. | Western's Disaster Risk Reduction | Cord | In 2011, the DRR minor became a way for students to understand and address the causes of disaster. Students explore how environmental disturbances impact vulnerable communities and how socio-political and historical processes in these communities create inequitable outcomes. Students that have successfully completed the DRR minor requirements may wear the DRR cord at graduation. It is a marker of their achievement and a reminder that they can support vulnerable communities in reducing disaster risk by addressing social and environmental injustice through planning, policy, advocacy, and education.
